Vaping is not only a great way to reduce your nicotine intake, it's also more cost effective than traditional cigarettes. There are, however, a couple of recurring costs associated with vaping, one of which is replacing the coils. With the correct maintenance of your device, you can extend the amount of time between purchases and further reduce your outgoings.
How long does a coil last?
Coils tend to last around 1-2 weeks on average depending on how frequently they are used. It is possible to extend this and improve the quality of your vape by correctly priming your coils.
How often should coils be primed?
Coils should be primed every time they are replaced. Many people replace their coils when they begin to experience the burnt taste by simply unscrewing the old one, screwing in the new one, and continuing to vape. This is incorrect usage and will shorten the life of your coils.
How to prime your coils
To correctly prime your coil, follow these simple instructions:
Method 1
Fill your tank with e-liquid and leave it to stand for between 5-30 minutes before vaping (the longer the better). This will allow the juice to fully saturate the cotton inside your coil.
If you are using a high PG e-liquid, it will saturate the coil faster. High VG e-liquids have a thicker consistency, so will take longer to absorb.
Method 2
1. Remove the old coil from your tank.
2. Take your e-liquid and carefully add a few drops into each of the air holes in the side of your new coil.
3. Screw the new coil into the tank.
4. Fill the tank with e-liquid.
5. If your tank includes an airflow adjustment, ensure it is almost completely closed.
6. Inhale deeply a few times through the mouthpiece but don't press the power button. This will help to pull the e-liquid through the cotton in the coil.
7. If your device features multiple wattage settings, begin with the lowest setting and take a few short drags, then gradually increase until you are using your regular vape settings.
Avoiding burnt coils
Here are a few ways you can avoid burnt coils and extend their life:
- Never let your tank fully empty. Ensuring there is always at least 1/4 of a tank left will stop you from dry vaping.
- Try to use your device on lower wattage settings where possible. Identifying the settings where your e-liquid is most flavoursome (usually between 20W to 80W is ideal) will improve your vaping experience and stop your coils from burning out too quickly.
- Allow around 3-5 seconds between hits so that your coil can absorb more e-liquid.
Cleaning your coils
As with any equipment, regular cleaning will keep it running correctly for longer.
- Remove any leftover e-liquid or residue between juice changes by removing the coil from the tank and washing it with hot, clean water.
- Allow coils to air dry before re-priming and continuing to vape.
